the long awaited nursery

Mom Achievement Unlocked: my child finally has his own room

you guys, this is a feat, a FEAT.  i was looking through my calendar and every single weekend since june i've had "paint nursery" written in.   of course "paint nursery" sounds way more simple than what was actually required.

NTH's room was my craft/junk/hide the mess because guests are coming/extra closet room.  there was a lot of stuff in there to lug out, sort out, donate, and find a new space for (still finding a space for stuff!) and then it had to be patched and sanded and wiped down and THEN we could paint.

well my friends, last week it happened.  HALLELUJAH.  i was getting really stressed about it. he's almost 5 months old, i felt like we both just must be bad people for not having it done already, but honestly we only have so much time and energy each day (also, if you speak enneagram hubby & i are both 9, so, like, heaven help us).

indulge me, let me give you a tour, starting with the sign on his door that a friend made for us.

this big cubby was originally for my crafty stuff. it's so big and heavy we decided to leave it.  it's been a perfect changing station - a great height and loads of room for diapers and wipes! and, we got a really slim garbage can and it fits behind the open door so it's nice and close but out of sight.  it makes the design conscious part of me very happy. the change pad is a water proof kushies pad and i just layered over a set of twin sheets folded inside a pillow case for extra padding. the old fishing basket on the wall was in mum and dad's house growing up and i love the little sock monkey sticking out.  i showed my friend who gave it to him and she says now he's a guard monkey.

i love this giant decal! thanks amazon :) it was pretty easy to put on and it makes such a nice focal point. if you look closely you can see NTH in his crib.
the rocking chair was a house warming present from my best friend.  she rocked both her babies in it and i'm so happy i can do the same.  another friend knows i love turquoise and asked if i wanted some curtains. yes please! they even have the blackout backing.  do you see the coca-cola fridge down there under the desk?  my husband's best friend got him that years ago for his computer room but i stole it for baby bottles :)  the teddy bear quilt was my baby quilt, made by my grammie and the navy and while quilt on his crib was made for NTH by my mum & dad!

years ago i snagged these little shelves from a friend who was clearing stuff out.  the porcelain birds came from mum, they were in the giveaway pile when she was moving *yoink* and the little framed rock art birds was made by my sis-in-law and given to me at his shower. too sweet.

I'm so excited by how my mobile turned out.  i made all the felt pieces totally from scratch (yay for dollar stores) and then ordered the plastic mobile from, where else, amazon and then assembled it.

the friend that gave the curtains also gave me this kick ass Sesame St. stuffed animal holder!

i repainted this dresser. the bottom drawer was so warped and not easy to use so i just took it out!  i filled in the bottom with styrofoam from the crib packing and set two little baskets on top. i'm really happy with how it turned out. Corwin got the bunting for Christmas from another friend and it fits along that wall perfectly!

can we all just take a moment and appreciate the magnificence of the giant sparkle ball?
this was a yankee swap gift that i bee-lined for!  i cannot pass up sparkle.

i decided to use some of the star decals over here just to carry the theme around the room a bit more. hubby says he wishes they glowed in the dark "that would've been cool". yes dear. the wonky cord hanging down is for our fancy schmancy baby monitor that his co-worker built us. we tool it down to paint and now of course haven't put it back up yet (ennea 9, it's a thing)

and back to the door. see the garbage can? that's right, you don't *heart sings*
you do see the lovely wooden growth chart! another gift from friends and that's the next thing to get mounted on the wall. the star rug was one of the first things my mum bought, that and the crib, she knew i wanted gray in the nusery.  it's so sweet and was the reason i chose the "dream big" decal with all the stars.  even that little nightlight has stars cutout in it and that was a random baby shower present before anyone (me included) had a star theme idea. i love how things come together.

so, the key to furnishing a nursery on the cheap is to have lots of friends and family who are excited for you because we literally bought a can of paint, one art print, the kushies waterproof pads, & the supplies for the mobile. i kid you not, everything else was either given to us or we already had it.

confessions of a real-life human mother

Mom Achievement Unlocked: 1st mother's day thoughts via GIPHY maybe it's because i got pregnant comparatively later in life than most others (at 33, gave birth at 34), maybe it's because i'm an enneagram 9, maybe it's because i'm secure in who i am, or maybe it's because i saw other mom's self-critical failure mentality and didn't want that nor think it was necessary, but i have no interest in doing the "right" thing or feeling like if i don't "do this" i'm a mess or my child will be. not to say i don't have self-doubt and stress and want to do right by my child and spouse and family as a whole, but i believe those feelings can co-exist with figuring things out and having grace for myself. to me this isn't a pass/fail, win/lose scenario. to be perfectly honest, early in my pregnancy i was reading articles on how to cope with change and one thing that really spoke to me was treat it like an experiment. ever...

Pee Tally

i should start a weekly tally between myself and NTH to see who causes more laundry due to pee... ...but i won't because i'm quite sure the results would depress me
